If you’re starting to think that tattoos are a bit tame now that everyone has got one, maybe we can interest you in the latest trend: implanting LED lights beneath your skin?

For this, apparently, is the latest in fashion among biohackers according to Motherboard. The most recent LED implant, the Northstar V1, is worryingly large – around the size of a two Euro coin. But that hasn’t stopped Pittsburgh-based biohacking collective Grindhouse Wetware, who have made a number of implants in their native town, as well in Germany and Sweden.

The implant is, according to Motherboard, supposed to emulate bioluminescence, the light produced by animals like fireflies and jellyfish, and the LEDs will light up 10,000 times before giving up the ghost.

Fancy one? No, us neither. But if you do, then you can try the Grindhouse Wetware Facebook. Rather ominously, they claim to be biohacking their way into our hearts.
