File – we hope – under ‘Only in America’: General Electric has announced a new partnership with ShotSpotter to incorporate its gunshot detectors into GE’s smart streetlights.
The Verge reports that it will be possible to equip whole cities’ worth of GE smart street lights with ShotSpotters for relatively low cost, helping police to know exactly where gun shots have come from.
Once a streetlight senses a gun shot it will immediately alert the local police, with the technology precise enough to determine the exact location of the shots, the number of rounds fired and the number of shooters present.
